The first "leading article " of the ilarnitsg Herald consists

of a single sen- tence—this breathless announcement-

" We are happy to be able to announce, that within the next few hours, at least one, and probably two new candidates, of the highest commercial standing, will be an- nounced, on the Conservative !Merest, for the City of London."

New candidates have appeared, in the parsons of Mr. James Garth Marshall for Leeds, Mr. Sergeant Allen for Birmingham, and Mr. William Philip Price, of Tibberton Court, for the city of Gloucester.

The Anti-Msynooth party of Reading have declared that they do not consider themselves pledged to the sitting Members. Mr. Sergeant Talfourd has issued his address to the electors; which contains the "distinct avowal," that to any measures for endowing the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church he will offer his most strenuous opposition, "from whatsoever party they may proceed."

At Marlborough Street Police-office, yesterday, Charles Pollard was examined on a charge of fraudulently obtaining two bills of exchange for 1,0001. from Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, on pretence of getting them discounted. The na- ture of the charge was very briefly stated, and the man was remanded.
