THE HALFPENNY CULTURE

SIR,—My intention was not to deflect this corres- pondence away from Covent Garden and St. James's Square to Park Place, Cardiff. But obviously some guilty consciences have been stirred. All I wanted to do was to put in a plea for our own indigenous national arts, especially poetry and prose literature. Until the alien corn of opera is handed over to another body like the National Theatre, it will con- tinue to hamper proper provision being made for the literary arts. The comic situation in Wales over the past twenty years does at least show the Arts Council policy in microcosm. Heroes all.
