Still going strong

From Dr Anthony Starr

Sir: In your issue of May 13, Christopher Hudson, reviewing The Underground Dictionary, refers to it as a modest work of lexicography that would have Eric Partridge turning in his grave." Whether or not the book would turn Eric Partridge up, or on, or head-over-heels, has not yet been tested; but I can assure you that the grave is not the location in which he might perform these

manoeuvres.

I am happy to report that Eric Partridge is alive, and working as energetically as ever. He admits to seventy-eight; but those of us who are lucky enough to be his friends are sure that he is still young enough to enrich us with several more of his erudite and witty works.
