The East; a Narrative of Personal Impressions of a Tour

in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. By William Young Martin. (Tinsley Brothers.) —In reading this book what principally strikes one is the perfect ease and safety with which a tour is now made which a few years ago was still looked upon as rather adventurous. We have also got from this book a more vivid impression than we had before of the blighting in- fluence of Turkish rule. Mr. Young tells a story about his dragoman, who was the same man that travelled in Syria with Mr. Buckle. The dragoman, after relating some incredible marvels, was asked by Mr. Martin, " Do you believe this story now, and what did Mr. Buckle say of it ?" "Mr. Buckle, master, Mr. Buckle,—he believed nothing, sir."
