Ah, love, could thou and I share out the prize For spies who spy on other countries' spies Why, since they all are at it all the time, Does fresh betrayal bring a fresh surprise?

And, since each nation carefully has planned, That others all should fully understand, How he has power to smash the scheme entire, Why, spill the beans—and keep the cash in hand.

But, oh the sad stale secrets which the spy Must hawk about, his trade to justify. I often wonder how the papers sell, Considering the frantic muck they buy.
