MR. GLADSTONE AND THE IONIAN ISLANDS. [TO THE EDITOR OF

THE "SPECTATOR."] Stit,—It was no doubt in Italian, and not in Greek, that Mr. Gladstone addressed the inhabitants of the Ionian Islands. When I was at Corfu a few years ago they pointed out to me with pride the spot where he spoke. It was a speech of some two or three hours' duration, which was surely a great feat, even for (as my wife reminds me)-- " Quells fonte Che spande di parlar si largo Same."
