.. 1,520 The Liberals, as in all recent by-elections, made tremen- dous efforts to win the scat and called in the .help of Mr. Lloyd George,- but the " revival " of their Party has yet to come. On the whole, the Unionist candidate did not do badly as he had, as the apologist of the Government, —unfair though this was—to bear the responsibility of the profound depression in the cotton and coal industries. His opponents had the easy advantage of flaunting all :sorts of attractive nostrums by means of which, according to their account, everybody might soon be in work again with good wages. * *
