It is reported that the Sultan, who promised to be

so economical, has commenced the usual career of Turkish ex- travagance. He is rebuilding "the Seraglio," the great palace recently destroyed by fire, in which he is right, and erecting five or six more in gratification of his own whim. The expense is enormous, while at the same time 30,000,000 piastres are about to be added to the paper currency to pay the Syrian indemnity. The Sultan is consequently becoming unpopular, but it is by no means clear that he is aware of the state of his own Treasury
