The expelling of Rudi

Sir: The claim (26 September) that Mr Rudi Dutschke is simply a poor unviolent young man who has epilepsy is hardly convincing. Indeed, its irrelevance is equalled only by the numerous statements from senior academics pleading the same young man's cause. If Mr Dutschke were an unknown German agitator, the fact that he does not intend to participate actively in under- graduate politics would represent an unassail- able case against the Home Secretary's decision. But Mr Dutschke is far from unknown: he is an international symbol for student anarchy and revolt.

The Cambridge left at present lacks both leader and figurehead: Mr Dutschke, however unwilling, could provide both. Even his presence might worsen the vicious demonstrations already planned for next term. The long-suffering resi- dents of Cambridge have had enough. A repu- tation as a political sanctuary must not be bought with violence on Cambridge streets.
