Murder in the name of God

Sir: African villagers in Angola have no cause to thank our addlepated clerics. Some might even wonder why they support enemies of the state with violence from the atheist East.

By what right does the Church support re- volution against lawfully constituted govern- ments of friendly states, and what is their cri- terion? Nobody could call Portuguese Africa racist. It is seen as a future Brazil and mixture to the point of miscegenation is normal. All fighting units are integrated and even the Europeans are often locally born. Above all, by what right does the Church subject peaceful Africans, and 50,000 have been killed in Angola alone, to a magnified Mau Mau horror, whose atrocities are only too well docu- mented. What, in the name of God, do they imagine they are doing? M. Mortimer The Royal Commonwealth Society, Northum- berland Avenue. London wc2
