LETTERS Shooting star

Sir: A man wins four gold medals for Eng- land at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, the second highest gold medal tally of the Games behind an Australian swim- mer. This feat would normally make head- lines. He would be filmed, feted and quite rightly acknowledged on his return, and no doubt the Minister of Sport would be there to meet him at the airport to bask in his reflected glory.

This did not happen. Why? Could it be that the Labour government is embarrassed that two of the gold medals won by Micky Gault were for .22 target free pistol, which it banned last year?

As it was, Micky and the other medal- winners were given a magnificent welcome at Heathrow by their families and other shooting enthusiasts. I hope that the gov- ernment overcomes its embarrassment and gives him due recognition in the next hon- ours list.

Perhaps the government should ban more sports. Imagine the medal haul we could have then!
