At The Oval An unkind correspondent wrote, a few weeks

ago, that it was a good thing that I was not a selector. I disagree. I would make an excellent selector. To start with I would not pick Mike Smith as an Australian tourist, much less as captain. He is no doubt a delightful and popular person, but on present form he is simply not worth his place in the team. Next I would pick a real wicketkeeper—Murray or Binks. I would- leave Edrich and perhaps Russell off the boat and strengthen the middle batting with Graveney or Sharpe. i liked Higgs very much at the Oval, and Jones is well worth his .place, but I'd rather have Statham and Trueman any day still than any two of the four fast bowling choices for Australia. And I hope they all prove me wrong. Some of them at least are sure to. But it was profoundly depressing for the first four days at the Oval to see how few of the England side looked like Test players.
