Mr. Charles Pears is an experienced amateur yachtsman who illustrates

his own books. His narrative of a cruise from the Thames to Penzance, South Coast Cruising (Arnold. 12s. 6d.), has a double purpose. It can be read as a pleasant narrative which is incidentally an intelligent guide-book. but there is the other, and in some respects more important. purpose of providing workmanlike charts for most of the harbours. These charts are drawn with a proper technical understanding of what is necessary for safety. We only wish that they could have been coloured in the manner which was introduced many years ago by the late Mr. Frank Cowper. Colour would make them easier to read and more attractive to look at. However, the book should be uncom- monly useful and may be recommended for any yacht's library.
