A prize of £5, which may be divided, is offered for a ten-line love- lyric, of which the last. three lines arc In the wailing-room Of the branch-line On a wet Sunday in Hull.

Any other monosyllabic well-known place name may be substituted for Hull (e.g. Bode, Penge, Crewe) regardless of Whether it has a branch- line. The metre suggested by the last lines given is something near that of " The Twelve Days of Christmas " am! " Clementine." But considerable latitude will be allowed.

Entries must be addressed to the Spectator,' 99 Gower Street, London, W.C.1, in envelopes marked " Competition," and must be received not later than April 11th. Results will be published in the Spectator of April 25th.
