Sir: In his interesting review of the NEB (21 March) Mr Anthony Burgess has one sen- tence which filled me with amazement. He wrote, The "Once upon a time" beginning of the Tower of Babel story seems to cast doubt on its veracity: either the whole Bible is true or it is all a fairy story.' (My italics.) Surely he cannot mean this, for consider its implications. it must mean that the historical veracity of the whole of the New Testament including the account of the Crucifixion and Resurrection depends on the historical ver- acity of the story of the Tower of Babel. Christianity is rightly called an historical re- ligion, founded as it is on the life of Jesus Christ. Are we to be told now that it is founded on the story of the Tower. of Babel?
