Chomsky's views

Sir: May I be permitted to offer two factual comments on Charles Glass's article headed 'Senseless censors'?

1. He refers to Chomsky as having been `asked' by George Theiner, editor of Index on Censorship, to write his article and that, as a result of protests, Theiner 'did agree to publish . . . a rebuttal by William Frankel . . . and to give Chomsky the right of reply'. In fact, I was invited by Mr Theiner to reply to Chomsky and was given no indication of the intention to publish a second article from Chomsky.

2. Mr Glass supports Chomsky in the debate and, in addition to his own advoca- cy of that side, devoted no less than 18 inches to a summary of Chomsky's views. The space given to a summary of my article is 51/2 inches. I do not think this constitutes a balanced presentation of both sides of an argument on which your readers are in- vited to form a judgment.
