Sons of the Manse. By the Rev. W. A. Fergusson.

(Dundee t Mathew. 10s. net.) The Scottish manse is known to have been the birthplace of many a great man. Mr. Fergusson, taking the Dictionary of National Biography as a standard, finds that one out of every six or seven famous Scots is a son of the manse, that out of the sons of clergy mentioned in the Dictionary one out of every six or seven is a son of the Scottish manse, and that this proportion is larger than Scotland might claim in respect of her population. His list includes many well-known men, such as Lord Campbell, Wilkie, Lockhart, Alison and Zachary Macaulay.
