The result of the by-election in Central Leeds was declared

on Friday, July 27th, as follows :- Sir Charles Wilson (C.) .. .. 13,085 Mr. H. H. Slesser (Lab.) .. .. 11,859 Mr. Gilbert Stone (Lib.) 8,026 C. majority over Lab. .. 1,726 Mr. Slesser received 3,515 more votes than at the General Election and the Conservative poll was reduced by over 1,000. Mr. Stone, who this time called himself simply a Liberal without any prefix, was the chief sufferer, as the Liberal vote was only about half what it was at the General Election. The Times says that probably many of the votes lost to Mr. Stone were transferred to Sir Charles Wilson (though we suggest that some were also trans- ferred to Mr. Slesser), as Independent Liberals had not forgotten that as a National Liberal Mr. Stone had opposed the Asquithian Liberal candidate, Major Barnes, in East 'Newcastle. The machinery of the Labour Party in Central Leeds is particularly efficient and Sir Charles Wilson has done very well to hold the scat. We are particularly glad that he has done so, as he was subjected to repeated attempts to refuse him a hearing.
