SIR,—I hope Leslie Adrian's harrowing maternity tale is not typical.

For my part, I have nothing but praise for the NH maternity service.

As I live in a small village, 1 went to my doctor for all my ante-natal visits, and, for the last three months to the small local maternity home for psychoprophylactic training for the birth. As a result, I got to know and trust the midwives there, and the birth of my baby was a marvellous ex- perience. Although the home was very understaffed, and literally overflowing with babies, the nurses and midwives were helpful, sympathetic And patient. In fact, my nine days there were all too short. My troubles didn't start until I took my baby home!
