Miles from Nashville

From Mr Jonathan Kreeger

Sir: Much as I hate to play the spoilsport, I am afraid that Michael Gove is mistaken (Politics, 20 November). The song on which he based his article is actually entitled 'How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life?' Its delightful lyrics were penned by Alan Jay Lerner for MGM's Royal Wedding; in that film it was first deliv- ered, mock-vaudeville fashion, by Fred

Astaire and gum-chewing Jane Powell. By no possible stretch of the imagination could it be described as a 'Nashville ballad'.

Had country-and-western music ever employed lyricists as talented as the late Mr Lerner, it might — who knows? — have become halfway bearable.
