The French Government has demanded explanations from the Governor of

New Caledonia as to his treatment of missionaries in Lifu. It is not, says M. Drouyn de Lhuys, the object of the Emperor to impede Protestant missionaries, but rather to encourage them. The acts of violence of which the London, Mission recently complained are indignantly disavowed, and the mission apparently may be re-established.
