SIR,—It certainly did "occur to me ", that football pools were legal and my letter was intended to draw attention to the fact that while wholesale gambling is legal, tossing for coppers is an offence.

In my view gambling is a social evil of the first magnitude but I am by no means sure that legislation can provide a remedy.
