MORTALITY IN THE METROPOLIS.

Results of the Registrar-General's return of mortality in the Metropolis for the week ending on Saturday last : the first column of figures gives the aggregate number of deaths in the corresponding weeks of the ten previous years.

Total (Including unspecified causes) 11,555 1,196 In the first two weeks of December, the deaths were 1004 and 1090; the week before last and last week they were 1166 and 1196: the last two re- turns were both somewhat swelled by Coroners' reports of the month and quarter ; but the real increase of mortality is considerable, and is attributed to the weather, which has been unfavourable to public health. The excess last week was chiefly among persons of the middle age.
