Bangladesh travail

The decision of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to declare a state of emergency in Bangladesh is a wise one, provided that the time thus gained is used for the implementation of a vigorous programme designed to root out the corruption, disorder and violence which have marked the short and unhappy history of his new country. Bangladesh is not rich, and has few resources beyond its land and the energies of its people. In any circumstances it would have been difficult to repair quickly the damage done by the war with Pakistan, but the country has been bedevilled by the continuance, after independence, of the activity of armed bands of looters belonging to the Sheikh's own party, and by the inability of the government to keep order. It is a tragedy that a country born in such hope and in receipt of such goodwill has come to such a pass. Only Sheikh Iviujibur can save Bangladesh; and to do so he must act ruthlessly
