The Kafirs, whose " depredations" on the North-eastern border of

our African colony have become a standing grievance for years, have now converted them into a regular predatory war. As a sort of " judgment," Sir Andries Stockenstrom, the great advocate of Kafir treaties, has sustained an attack on his own house. If the Scottish border were peopled by a race wilder than gipsies but not less thieving, and Sir James Graham had insisted on entering into diplomatic stipulations with the " Kings " of that Pariah race, the cases might have been similar. As the indi- genous gipsies of South Africa have converted their thieving in- to a general onslaught, it is to be hoped that at length the eyes of the British rulers will be opened to the silliness of treating them like an independent nation ; that British authority will be extended to the distant wilds ; and that the practice of leaving the head robbers to act as magistrates over their gangs will be abo- lished : it is high time.
