We offer our sympathy to the United States when we

record with great regret that the coast of California was visited by a series of severe earthquake shocks on Monday and Tuesday. The worst damage seems to have been due to the bursting of a reservoir dam. Merci- fully the loss of life—twelve persons are reported killed— was less than might have been expected from the accounts of the immense destruction 'of buildings in the old coast- town of Santa Barbara..
