Telephone trouble

Sir: I refer to an article in the Daily Telegraph by a Miss Aitken in which she says that she was advised by a complaints officer of British Telecom to vote socialist when she was unable to get her telephone repaired promptly.

The inference is that since 'privatisation' the employees are going to make subscri- bers pay by taking as long as possible over repairs. Since you edit, one supposes, a non-socialist periodical perhaps this is the reason it took you such a long time to get your own telephones repaired! It appears that the employees of BT prefer the over-manning days of yore and short of putting offenders up against a wall and shooting them what do you suggest should be done to remedy the situation?

A. Green PS I do not subscribe my address in case my telephone goes 'out of order'.
