Sir: Anna Ford (Diary, 13 June) laments that the majority of children today have to choose between history and geography. My own daughter, however, in writing to a Cam- bridge college to ask for advice on entry requirements for engineering courses was advised that there was no point in her apply- ing for interview since her A level subjects were maths, physics, English and general studies (with French at A/S). They required a minimum of three and preferably four sci- ence A levels and regretted that girls' schools in particular seemed to think it wise to mix arts and science subjects.

Thank heavens they do. Perhaps that is why the next generation of women will con- tinue to be more creative and broadminded in its approach to problems than their male counterparts.
