Sra,—The gulf between Dean Mansel and the undergraduate may be a wide one ; but I submit the following epigram from an undergraduate of my own College as a bridge, with apologies to a deservedly eminent Professor. When Mr. Bywater as Proctor sat in Exeter College to receive the names and fees from undergraduates for the examination called "Moderations," a candidate returning from the College Hall wrote :— "A guinea's enough for 'Mods.' one would think, But we're told by the Exeter Porter, That though some of it goes to buy paper and ink, Yet that most of it goes to Bywater."
