We had previously been discussing the Trinidad affair. It is

not a very pleasant business and not particularly creditable to anyone concerned, and those who insist that the Colonial Empire exists to extort high profits out of underpaid natives can work up a big story out of it. Mr. Ormsby-Gore, facing his difficult task, was able to create a real feeling of confidence that the future would be different from the past. When a Minister begins by saying, " I am bound to take the criticism that is offered, and I do so with regret," he does more to win the high esteem of the House than he could do by any number of adroit excuses.
