MARTIANS BEARING BURSARIES

SIR,—Mr. Amis seems to have been so eager in 'the free pursuit of knowledge' as to have chased iL clean away. He should know, for example, that we do not need to choose betWeen quantity and quality in education. All experience both here and abroad sug- gests that if you have more of everything you get more of the best too. He should also know that people want to reform the universities, not to satisfy ambitious parents, personnel-hungry industrialists or schoolteachers, but to accommodate the enor- mous numbers of young men and women who want and are ready for three years at a university. Argu- ment by false alternatives and Aunt Sallies is not very impressive. It is vicious when used to justifY shortage. Or does Mr. Amis really believe that 'the free pursuit of knowledge' must not be offered to most people—only to Mr. Amis and his chums? TYRRELL BUIC'1 -04
