The polling at the by-election in Bow and Bromley resulted

in the return of Mr. Guthrie, the Unionist candidate, by a majority of 2,115 ; the figures being, Guthrie, 4,238, and Spender, 2,123. At the last election—i.e., that of 1895—usually regarded as the Unionist high-water mark, the Unionist majority was only 1,161. Mr. Spender fought very pluckily, but he could hardly have expected to win a Metropolitan seat at such a juncture, for London is always intensely Imperialist. Two more by-elections are pending, at Exeter and in the Wells division of Somerset, both Unionist seats. It will be interesting to see if they will also show increased majorities.
