The monument to the memory of Muir, Palmer, Gerald, Margarot, and Skir- sing, the Scottish political mai ty is of 1793, which has lately been in the course of erection in the Old Calton burying-ground, was finished on Friday last; when a flag was immediately hoisted on its top, in token of rejoicing at the event. The monument is in the form of a plain obelisk, about ninety feet in height; and standing as it does on an elevated site, has a very prominent, though, it must be confessed, not very elegant appearance from the North Bridge. It has more the appearance of a factory-chimney than of anything else.—Edinburgh Witness.

The Marischal College at Aberdeen has had a narrow escape from destruction. On Wednesday week, the floor of the Surgical Museum was discovered to be on fire, and the flames had just reached a large collection of preparations preserved in spirits. By great exertions the fire was extinguished in an hour.

It appears that Orkney was not single in being visited with a shower of ashes on Wednesday the 3d September. A correspondent at Murkle says—" A shower of ashes, similar to the one in Orkney, fell likewise in the parishes of Thurso, Olrig, and Dunnet. Some who had clothes bleaching immediately shook off the dust; but others attempted to wash it off, and found the task very difficult. The matter which fell much resembled smithy ashes."—Scotsman.

On Monday the 22d September, three earthquakes occurred at Comrie; first, about one p.m. ; next, about twenty minutes afterwards; and the third about twenty minutes to four o'clock p. m. But as they were comparatively slight, they did not give much alarm.—Scotsman.
