NEWS OF THE WEEK.

NOT many hours after the reassembling of Parliament conditions of crisis rapidly developed. When we write on Thursday it would be unjustifiable to prophesy that there will be an early General Election, but the possibility is by no means absent. On Wednesday night Mr. Asquith gave notice of his intention to move the rejection of the Russian Treaty. His motion expresses a strong desire for closer trade relations with Russia, but condemns the Treaty on the ground that so far from helping unemployment here it would " divert resources " which are urgently needed for development in Great Britain and the Empire generally. Unionists for the most part will no doubt support Mr. Asquith's motion and the Treaty thus seems to be doomed. The only question is whether the Government will choose to fall on that issue. For our part we believe that if the Cabinet does so it will be only as the result of strong pressure from the Left. * * * *
