* * * We greatly regret to record the death

of Lord Long of Wraxall, which occurred on Friday, September 26th. Known throughout the greater part of his career as Mr. Walter Long he was a splendid example of a class which is not likely to be exactly reproduced in future. He belonged to a well-known Wiltshire family of land- owners. He brought to his public career (which he entered upon as an indisputable matter of duty, even though he found much of the drudgery very irksome) what may be described as a sporting spirit of fair play, directness, sympathy and sincerity which never failed. Everybody trusted and liked him because he had moral courage and supreme loyalty. He was incapable of " letting anybody down."
