The immediate result of the meeting on Thursday, August 26th,

was that Mr. Smith said "I will fight a bit yet," but Mr. Cook issued a statement the next day to the effect that he was convinced that at least "some Ministers" wanted "the great struggle to be ended in an honourable way, which would not leave bitterness and unrest." Therefore he had come to the conclusion that it was for the miners to consider whether they should put forward definite proposals. If the -delegates' conference follow the advice of Mr. Cook they will produce acceptable proposals ; if they follow Mr. Smith they will not. That is the situation when we write.
