Pipe dreams
From Lady Powell Sir: A very brief response to Mrs Taliani's letter (28 August) about my water supply problem in Italy. Mrs Taliani gives her address as Vienna, so it's hard to believe she has very much detailed knowledge of the affairs of Palombara Sabina, a small rural commune outside Rome. But in her eagerness to please whoever put her up to write the letter she has failed to check her facts. Firstly, my house does have all the necessary permissions, certified by the commune. All the houses in my zone were condoned in 1985.
Secondly, far from the intention to supply my house with mains water never being clear, the commune specifically confirmed to my surveyor in 1999 that I would have water by the spring of 2000.
Thirdly, the necessary pipeline has been installed by the commune. They just refused to put any water in it!
Better stick to Viennese confections, Mrs Taliani, than make them up yourself!
