I am anxious to think the best of the Dean

and Chapter of Hereford, but they make it very difficult. On Sunday afternoon—in common, I observed, with a good many other persons of godly aspect—I made a hopeful and confident approach to the cathedral, only to find every door inexorably locked. So it always is, I am told (I hope inaccurately) between the end of matins and the beginning of evensong at 6.80. I should have thought Sunday was a fitting day for Christian men to visit a Christian fane, even between services.
