No. 495: Paper chase

COMPETITION

'The most controversial, most unpredictable, most liked and disliked of all modern politi- cians,' George Brown no less, described in the Sunday Times, 31 March, how he came to choose the head of the DEA :

. . still turning over all the possibilities, I walked one Sunday morning early in 1964 down, of all unlikely places, Fifth Avenue, New York. Just passing St Patrick's Cathedral, I came upon the then British Economic Minis- ter in Washington, who was, of course, Sir Eric Roll, with his wife and daughter: and I made the decision in the few steps it took me to reach him and say "Good morning."'

Competitors are invited to imagine that they also are or were 'controversial, unpredictable' politicians and to reveal how some of Britain's most important political appointments were made under their jurisdiction. A maximum of eighty words is allowed and entries, marked 'Competition No. 495,' must be in by 15 April.
