Grooming for power

Sir: Many may be surprised by Sir Con O'Neill's reported statement (Notebook, July 15) that he is "convinced that the British want out" of Ulster. As far as I can assess it the people of this country loathe the IRA murderers and cannot understand why the Government, by a combination of ineffectual repression and negotiations with them, appears to be grooming them for power along the well-trodden path of India, Cyprus, Kenya, etc.

It seems probable, however, that by "the British," Sir Con does not mean the people of this country, but rather that special group he belongs to, and which he represented so well at the Brussels surrender talks, whose loyalty is not to Britain but to the supranational order, here the Common Market.

One may ask too whether Europe will ever allow us to stop the coming communist revolution in Ulster. Let us recall that Sicco Mansholt, our President, who recently declared that the terms of entry for Britain to the Market Would not be altered by a jot, was, a few weeks ago, telling the areek government that the Six's economic sanctions against them Would continue as long as Greece Maintained her anti-communist Position. It may be recalled that the Present Greek government came .to Power to prevent a communist takeover which was to have proceeded somewhat on IRA lines, and Mansholt has made it clear that the European authorities will tolerate nothing less than a return to the status quo ante. How long does anyone think that the bright Pink Mansholt, and his backers, the deep red Willy Brandt and others, would allow us to put an end to the incipient communist revolution in Ulster? Let it be recalled that we will be in very delicate economic health in the first few years of Market entry and in no position to resist Brussels.

Patriotism is indivisible and all `..vho support Ulster's right not to be Joined on to another country against its will, must first support Britain's right to the same. Only a free Britain can maintain a free Ulster.
