Vegetables, pro and con

Sir: In his article (Food, 8 July), Digby Anderson says, 'Bass with boiled potatoes and mangetouts . . . is disgusting.' And, 'Never serve meat or fish and vegetables.'

Such uppity arrogant foodie rubbish! We live in the South of France, which is delightful, of course, but we sadly miss the British custom of 'meat and two veg'. The most inspired French haute cuisine would be greatly improved with some floury boiled or crispy roast potatoes, and the thought of succulent, lightly cooked mange- touts has us salivating in delight! He should be jolly grateful that English restaurants don't serve meat or fish on their own.

As punishment for his silly snobbery, he should be sent to eat at one of these 'lower- class buffets' he disdains. He might find some real food there!
