Mr. E. N. Buxton writes to the Times of Saturday

that the Government of Bombay are about to set up a sanctuary for the African elephant in the coast-area of Somaliland. Within the reserve, shooting at elephants will be forbidden, and the observance of this rule will be an essential, condition to the grant of permission to shoot other animals within that area. The reserve in question is to extend from, the Sheik Pass on the east to the Abyssinian frontier on the west. The northern boundary will be "the edge of the 'Hand.' " Altogether the seserved area will con- tain two hundred miles by fifty. At present elephant herds are only to be found in a district containing about forty miles square situated within the , reserve. The difficulty will of course be to prevent hunting by the natives.' ,
