`Israel Amos' Sir: 'Israel Amos (31 October) protests against the

use of British defence regulations in Israel and the West Bank. A point that seems to have escaped his notice is that there happens to be a war going on in the area. and defence regula- tions of this type were enforced in Britain itself during the war. They were also continued by the Jor- danians, and it is Jordanian not. Israeli law which is administered on the West Bank. There is how- ever one difference in Israeli prac- tice compared with that of Britain or Jordan—no executions are car- ried out.

The solution lies in ending the necessity for these regulations, in other words peace. This can only come when Arabs recognise that Jews. like Arabs. also have the right to national self-determination. Alan Fox 29 Grangeway Gardens, Redbridge, Essex
