An appeal - was made to President von Hindenburg, who gave

his support to Herr Marx, and in the end Herr Hergt became Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Justice. By a useful device the Nationalists saved their face in regard to Herr Graef by putting forward alternative candidates for the Ministry of the Interior. Herr von Keudell, the alternative to Herr Graef, was naturally preferred by Herr Marx. The Presi. dent's action is a proof that he means to perform his duty (as he promised when he was elected, though he Was .a. NationalisI noininee) of being loyal to the Constitution. Although the Blue-Black Coalition lS in the saddle it is 13Y no- Means certain that it will stay there very long.
