The emergence of the Daily Mail that sprang from the

ashes of a staider journalism, fully panoplied with a circulation of 60,000 on the • day of its birth, the renaissance of the Times, the advent of the picture paper, the strange stories of the rise of the houses of Harmsworth, Pearson and Newnes, these and many more interesting things are related by Mr. Harold Herd in his Making of Modern Journalism (George Allen and Unwin; 3s. .6d.). There is an amusing picture of those two great figures on the Pall Mall Gazette, Lord Morley and- Mr; Stead, who "disagreed on everything from the existence of God to the make-up of a newspaper." Each of Mr. Herd's little century of pages is big with history and human interest..
