It is officially announced that Sir Auckland Geddes, the British

Ambassador at Washington, is to retire for reasons of ill-health. Ever since Sir Auckland came .home -last summer suffering from eye trouble there were rumours of his resignation, all of which were, however, subsequently denied. Since 1920 Sir Auckland has occupied. -the Embassy in Connecticut Avenue with dis- tinction both to his country and to himself, and, apart from Lord Bryce, few British Ambassadors have travelled so extensively throughout the United States or have got to know American conditions so thoroughly at first hand. By reason of his Canadian association Sir Auck- land had, of course, special advantages in this direction ; the task of his successor will, therefore, not be an easy one. At a very critical stage in British-American rela- tions Sir Auckland ,made-,no nlistakes, and the American Press contains numerous eulogies on the success of his term of office. a- * s *
