Much interest was excited on Tuesday by the statement that

the City of London Conservative Association had sent a letter to Mr. Baldwin pointing out the danger of allowing the Labour Party to take office, and suggesting that Mr. Baldwin should approach Mr. Asquith with a view to anti-Socialist co-operation between the Unionist and Liberal Parties. It seems that the letter was private, and we are therefore unable to do more than suggest its contents. It was sent more than a fortnight ago, and no doubt it was only one of several attempts which have been made to bring about a fusion of the anti- Socialist majority. But little need be expected from all this. Mr. Asquith had his opportunity and refused it. He is not likely to change his mind now. What may happen when Mr. Ramsay MacDonald has become Prime Minister is another matter altogether.
