Sir: Mr John Radcliff (Letters, 29 December) equates decent human

feelings with politics in his answer to Mr Christopher Sykes's letter of 22 December. No sensible person fights in defence of a political system—but many people might feel themselves constrained to fight against undisguised evil!

May I, as a non-practising Catholic married to a Jew, summarise the excellent reasons for which Mr Sykes fought in a very few words: Auschwitz, Maidanek, Treblinka, Buchenwald, Mauthausen, Belzer, Sobibor, Chelmno, Ponary, Theresienstadt, Warsaw, Wilno, Skarzysko, Bergen-Belsen, Janow, Dora, Neuengamme and Pustkow.
