We deal with the subject of the Convention of the

Democratic Party of America for nominating a Presi- dential candidate in our leading columns. As we go to press it seems certain that both Mr. McAdoo and Governor Smith, the favourites, have reached a deadlock, and that they will both have to withdraw. If this should be so, it seems quite possible that Mr. John Davis will receive the nomination. Needless to say, such a choice would be extremely welcome in this country. But the Convention has at present only reached its thirty-eighth ballot, and it must be remembered that Mr. Wilson, fOr instance, did not emerge until the forty-sixth.
