For Lords a rise

It is reported that the Government's proposals for the upper house, while imposing further restrictions on the legislative powers of the peers, will increase their remuneration.

Wages must rise—so runs the general thesis— Only as productivity increases.

But Aubrey Jones most graciously affords A large exception for the House of Lords. For there—and there alone--by his good leave, The less they vote the more they will receive. And those who in the constitution's wreck Can lose their balance may yet keep their

cheque.

The Bill-'will bid them in its final stages

To stand and fall like men and raise their wages.
